Finally!

Did you know that Nick's a smoker? Of meat, though, not cigarettes. :) He's had this smoker for about a year now, but only today did we finally have someone come to get it bricked in! It looks great.

Next project? An arbor over the second patio slab. Nick, with the help of his dad and his brothers, is going to tackle that project in a couple of weeks hopefully. I think we'll spend more time enjoying our back patio now that it looks nicer!

Shopping Carts

So, I may not do anymore big grocery shopping trips at Walmart. It's not because of their selection. It's not because of their prices. It's because Kate's car seat doesn't fit well in the cart.

At Target, the car seat fits well in the front shelf thingy part of the cart. At Walmart, it doesn't. So yesterday I had to just put Kate's seat into the cart itself. Not so good when I have a grocery list that is front and back.

As I was nearing the end of my list, I couldn't resist. I just had to take some pictures of my poor girl, lost amongst the food stuffs.

I think I'll stick with Target from now on.

Voting (F'Real this time)

Sorry! I guess this is really how you place a vote. You can do it once a day through next Sunday. When I did it, it asked me to verify the quoted text - just whatever is in quotation marks. Then you submit.

I was a little disappointed that it chose this picture... I like the flower headband one best!

Congratulations!

I'm THAT mom. (Go vote!)

OK, so I'm a little embarrassed to say that I have officially become THAT mom. You know the one. She thinks her kid is the cutest ever, and proudly whips out the brag book to anyone who asks (or doesn't ask) to see. Yup. That's me now.

So... I'm admitting to you now that I entered Kate in a photo contest for Parents magazine to be featured on their cover. They're crazy if she doesn't win.

Kate is 3 months old

Dear Kate,

You are such a joy to your mama and daddy! You are such a great baby. Not to say you don't have fussy days, but for the most part, you are very go-with-the-flow! You have been consistently sleeping through the night for several weeks now. (Thank you very much!) You have recently discovered your hands and feet. It's so funny how you stare down at your feet as you kick your cute legs. It looks like you're thinking, "Are those mine??" Those legs are constantly moving, especially at bath time when you just kick and splash, grinning from ear to ear. You smile almost anytime I smile at you, and you are your "smiliest" in the morning. It's cute to see you smile at your reflection in the mirror. I think a giggle is not far off! You're not big on tummy time, so you haven't started to roll yet. Your head and neck are strong, and you love to push up on your legs when we hold you up.

And after all that kicking and smiling and playing, you show me you're tired by laying your arms on either side of your sweet head. I love to hold you close and rock you as you fall asleep.

Love,
Mama

Here's Kate with her stuffed elephant. As I take monthly pictures, it will be nice to have something to size her up against.

And another picture of our cutie-pie, taken at 11 weeks.

Back to School Tomorrow

Please pray for me to keep it together tomorrow. You should see my checklist for tonight and tomorrow morning. Add the fact that Nick's out of town, and I'm a basket case.

But I'm counting my blessings...
*I was VERY blessed to get 12 whole weeks of maternity leave. (I wasn't supposed to get that much.)
*It's only 8 weeks until I finish out the school year, and then I get to stay home with Kate full time. Woo hoo!
*I'm so grateful that Mom (Gram) is going to keep Kate. I'm glad I don't have to leave her with strangers.

Here's a new picture of our darling girl. She's getting so big!

Happy Birthday, Kirby!

Today our Kirby Girl turned 4 years old!

Kirby is a dog. There, I said it. With how much she feels like a member of our family (and the first born child at that), it's easy to get confused sometimes. She's packed with personality, and she is devoted to her people (as any good Golden should be).

Here are a few of Kirby's known aliases:
1. Kirbster
2. Kirbinater
3. Kirbunctious
4. Kirbastinker
5. Kirbessential

A few fun Kirby facts:
1. RE: Fetching
Goldens are supposed to love to fetch, but apparently no one told Kirby. She *might* bring the ball back a couple of times, but she'd rather chase the ball once, attack it, then lie down in the grass.
2. RE: Swimming
Goldens are well-known swimmers, but our Kirby hates the water. Nick got her in the river with him when she was just a few months old, and she was scarred for life. (Nick was literally scarred from all the scratching the panicked Kirby inflicted.)
3. RE: Showing Off
Kirby is proud of her toys. Anytime someone comes in the door, she grabs a toy to go show them. She wags her tail and trots around with the toy held high in her mouth.
4. RE: Commands
I think we did a pretty good job training Kirby. Although she gets a bit too excited when guests come over, she does not jump. She rarely barks. She knows sit, down, shake, stay, and high-five, and being a Golden, she is eager to please and complies quickly.
5. RE: Scaredy Cat
Kirby can be pretty timid. She's scared of the stroller running into her on walks, the vacuum cleaner freaks her out, and she's always worried I'm going to step on her. (OK, maybe that one's founded.) Also funny is her fear of walking through partially closed doors, even when there's plenty of room for her to pass. She'll just stand there and cry for someone to open it more. If I successfully coax her, she darts through it as if it were on fire. Crazy dog.

Here are a few pictures of The Kirbster to enjoy...

Kirby's Litter - She has on the pink collar.
The day we picked her out

My favorite Kirby puppy pic
This is hilarious - if you look closely, you see she has a fly on her nose, and she's cross-eyed trying to look at it!

The first (and last) swimming experience.

What a terror she was as a puppy! Those teeth were sharp, and she loved to use them.

Kirby adores Nick.

So pretty! We love her dark coat. In fact, that's one of the main reasons we picked her.

Putting up with a costume... I dressed her up and took pictures like this one to share with my students on occasion. Kirby was always a classroom celebrity!

Warming up to Kate... Kirby still doesn't know quite what to think of her. I tell her she's going to be like "Nana," the dog in Peter Pan who tucks the children in for bed. :)

Happy birthday, dear Kirby, happy birthday to you!
